Pittsburgh, PA – The Oberlin College women's tennis team concluded the fall portion of their schedule in grand fashion, upending Division I Robert Morris University 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.
The match was played on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University and was scored using the Division I seven-point system. The victory was the first for Head Coach
Constantine Ananiadis against a Division I opponent since taking over the program at Oberlin.
The Yeowomen trailed 3-2 when
Grace Porter and
Erin Johnson took to the court for their respective fourth and fifth singles matches. Porter was able to even the match at three-all after taking down Dounia Zinbi 6-3, 6-2. Moments later, Johnson, a rookie from Kohler, Wisconsin, clinched the match by finishing off Brazilian native Isabella Novella 6-2, 7-5.
Oberlin was able to earn the first point of the match by winning two of the three doubles matches.
Brenna Sheldon and
Preeya Shah were 8-4 winners in the second slot, while the first-year pairing of
Ariana Abayomi and Johnson were 8-3 victors at No. 3.
Sheldon added another point by topping Marie-Sophie Heine 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. In the No. 1 singles slot
Farah Leclercq dropped a three-set battle to Carolina Mourao Teixeira 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.
Oberlin concludes its fall season having played in two tournaments and with a dual-match record of 1-1. The team will return to action in February.
