Oberlin, Ohio - Oberlin College senior
Madeline Schultz cruised to victory in the North Coast Athletic Conference Indoor Pentathlon on Saturday afternoon at the John W. Heisman Field House.
Schultz, a native of Concord, Massachusetts, racked up 2,920 points to best the second-place finisher Emily Amburgey by 238 points as she finished with 2,682 points.
The Yeowomen also got a fine performance from sophomore
Ryann McChesney as she tallied 2,491 points to place fifth overall.
Schultz was victorious in the 800 meters with a time of 2:23.35. McChesney's best event was the 55-meter hurdles as she checked in second with a mark of 9.27.
Competing on the men's side of the event was junior
Josh Gallagher. A throws specialist from West Harrison, New York, Gallagher displayed his overall athletic ability by placing fifth overall with 2,606 points.
He shot put heave of 48-02 was nearly 16 feet longer than the second –best throw in the event.
“This was a great way to kickoff the conference meet,” Head Coach
Ray Appenheimer said. “Madeline did her thing and Ryann was just awesome for someone who was competing in her first multi-event meet in her career, and to perform like that at the conference level was just great. Josh also added some critical team points.”
This event is part of next weekend's NCAC Championships. The combination of Schultz and McChesney provided the Yeowomen with 14 team points, while Gallagher picked up four points for the Yeomen.
The Yeowomen won the conference crown last season and have a great chance to repeat again this year, while the Yeomen will be right in the mix for a top-three finish. All of the action gets underway next Friday evening from Denison University.
