Canton, Ohio – In a tightly contested battle for fifth place at the NCAC Championships, the Oberlin College women's swimming and team came up just short as it recorded 763 points compared to 768 for Allegheny College. The Yeomen ended seventh with 431 points.
“All in all it was a very impressive meet for our program,” Head Coach Mark Fino said. “We had many strong swims and broke multiple school records.”
Competing in her final conference championship meet, senior
Laura Fries kicked off the night finals by breaking her own school record in the 200-yard backstroke with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 2:06.90 to finish in fifth place.
After breaking two relay records last night, the Yeowomen assaulted the record book once more as the foursome of
Grace Aheron,
Shannon Gallagher,
Flora Samis and
Sara Kadi establish a new school-best time of 3:36.33 in the 400-yard free relay.
Aheron put together an all-conference performance in the 200-yard butterfly as she finished in third place with an NCAA 'B' time of 2:06.44. The Roanoke, Virginia, native had previously automatically qualified for nationals in the event by touching in at 2:04.10 at the Wooster Invitational on December 3.
Kadi added a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard free with a school-record timestamp of 53.60.
Sophomore
Jane McIntyre registered the third-fastest time in school history in the 200-yard breast with a mark of 2:31.76 – ending in 12th place overall.
In women's 1-meter diving junior
Christine Martin finished sixth with 312.50 points and rookie
Chelsea Lane ended two spots back with 286.65 points.
On the men's side, First-year
James Foust turned in a season-best performance in the prelims of the 100-yard free style with a time of 47.93. His finals mark of 47.96 was good for 14th place.
Dimitri Macris and
Corey Spiro finished 19th and 20th, respectively in the 200-yard fly. Macris tapped the wall in 2:03.53, while Spiro was narrowly behind at 2:03.58. Macris also placed 11th in the 1,650-yard free with a time of 17:19.56.
Oberlin ended the meet with an impressive showing in the 400-yard free relay as the clique of
Chris Canning,
Jon Vimr, Foust, and
Nick Lashway combined to complete the course in a season-best time of 3:11.46.
Aheron, who will now shift her focus to the NCAA Championships on March 17-20 at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, will hope to be joined by some of her Oberlin teammates who recorded 'B' cuts.
