Box Score
Crawfordsville, Ind. – The Oberlin College football team couldn't overcome an early deficit as it fell on the road to Wabash College 42-21 on Saturday afternoon.
The Yeomen offense, which came into the game ranked third in the NCAC with 391.6 yards per game, managed just 250 yards against the Little Giants.
Senior
Joey Zebelian got the start at quarterback and finished the day 16-of-32 for 132 yards to go along with two interceptions and one touchdown.
Adam Lowther was the Yeomen's top ground gainer with 58 yards on 11 carries, while senior
Ryan Harvey led the receiving corps with 51 yards on seven catches.
The Yeomen (2-4, 1-3 NCAC) found themselves down 23-0 before they could really even take a breath. Wabash (5-1, 3-0 NCAC) marched 60 yards on nine plays on their first possession to go up 7-0. Later in the quarter - following a Zebelian INT - Little Giants quarterback Chase Belton would connect with Jonathan Horn on the very next play following the pick for a 75-yard scoring strike. A Little Giants field goal made it 16-0 at the end of one period.
After a quick three-and-out by the Yeomen to start the second quarter, Wabash would add another touchdown on 10-yard QB keeper by Belton.
On their ensuing possession the Yeomen were finally able to get their offense going as Zebelian led his team on a 9-play, 62-yard drive in 5:25 that resulted in tight end
Danny Enright's fourth score of the season. This one from seven yards out to make it a 23-7 game with 6:38 left in the opening half.
However, just when it appeared the Yeomen had life – Dan Ryan Wood would return the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown to steal the momentum right back.
The Yeomen continued to battle and would be within striking distance at the half, down just 30-14 thanks to a two-yard scamper into the end zone by
Josh Mandel on a beautifully designed naked boot leg. The drive, which was setup by a
David Kalgren interception that he returned 40 yards into Little Giants territory, was also aided by two personal foul calls on the home team.
In the third quarter the only scoring came via a safety by Wabash as they sacked Zebelian in the end zone as he attempted to make a deep pass down field.
Following a Wabash TD to start the fourth quarter, Oberlin would cover 72-yards on 11 plays in 5:28 as Mandel would cap things off with a QB sneak from 1-yard out. Mandel, who played mostly in short-yardage situations, had five rushes for 24 yards to go along with his two TDs. He also completed all four of his pass attempts for a total of 14 yards.
Kalgren led the Yeomen defense with a career-high 14 tackles and two interceptions.
Solomon Turner also made 10 stops in the loss.
Oberlin has another long trip ahead as it travels to Washington University in St. Louis next Saturday, before returning home for three straight games at Savage Stadium.
