Box Score
Washington, Pa. – The Oberlin College offense never got in rhythm, which allowed the Washington & Jefferson Presidents to secure a 35-9 win over the Yeomen on Saturday night at Cameron Stadium.
“We need to do a better job of taking a advantage of our opportunities on offense,” Head Coach
Jeff Ramsey said. “Defensively we played pretty well for the most part of the game, but when you are out there a long time its tough to keep stopping them over and over again.”
The Yeomen couldn't take advantage of three takeaways in the first half as the offense was held down to just 59 total yards.
Washington & Jefferson broke through on their second possession of the game on a 1-yard Brain Baldrige TD plunge, which was setup by a 48-yard scamper by senior Terrence McAllister.
Oberlin was gift wrapped a golden opportunity to score as the special forces unit came up big when
Ryan Harvey recovered a muff punt at the Presidents' 12-yard line, but a penalty combined with stingy defense limited the Yeomen to just three points.
Baldrige would add the second Presidents' TD from a yard out to cap off a 11-play 58-yard drive that covered just under six minutes on the clock – giving W&J a 14-3 lead at the break.
After a promising start to third quarter was short circuited by a penalty, Oberlin never was able to get back into the grove. The Yeomen would have two critical turnovers on back-to-back possessions late in the contest that were cashed in for 14 points by the Presidents.
Oberlin finally found the end zone on the game's final play as rookie quarterback
David Kalgren orchestrated an 11-play 61-yard drive that ended in a four-yard TD toss to sophomore #C.J. Holman#.
Making his first career start under center, junior
Joey Zebelian finished 10-for-22 for 88 yards to go along with one interception. He was also sacked five times, totaling 28 yards.
Harvey was the lone bright spot on offense as he hauled in eight balls for 90 yards. Sophomore
Adam Lowther ran for 47 yards on 17 carries. Kalgren also toted the ball five times for 27 yards.
Tyler Lewis spearheaded the defense with 9.5 tackles. Freshman
Eric Enrico, who earned Heisman Club Player of the Game honors, also had a strong performance in the secondary with 5.5 tackles and one pass break-up.
Drew Mixter added a fumble recovery and
Solomon Turner had an INT to close out the first half.
Oberlin is idle next week, but will return to the field on September 19 at Case Western Reserve University for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Earlier today, the Spartans upended fellow NCAC member Kenyon 33-21.
