Oberlin, Ohio – Senior stalwart
Skyler Dum scored two times to lift the Oberlin College men's soccer team to a season-opening 2-0 win over the visiting Heidelberg University Berg on Tuesday night at Fred Shults Field.
“This was a good win for us tonight to get our season started off on the right foot,” Head Coach
Blake New said. “I felt we did a good job at controlling the tempo of the game and luckily we were able to convert on couple of our scoring opportunities.
Dum's first goal came in thrilling fashion as he received a free kick from
Wyatt Hayman that came from five yards beyond the midfield line as he skied over a Berg defender - heading the ball over the keeper – giving OC a 1-0 in the 23rd minute of action.
After a slow start by both teams, Oberlin settled down to control the pace of play for a large majority of the half and carried that over in the second half. Making his return to the field in nearly two yeas, fifth-year senior
Zach Lewis had a clean look at the goal 16 minutes into the game that got denied, but the play jump started the offense pressure by the Yeomen.
After a couple of key saves in the opening minutes of the second period by
Zach Lipshultz, Oberlin settled down to once again play possession-style soccer before finally breaking through again in the 79th minute. The dynamic duo of Dum and
Oliver Miller-Farrell picked up right where they left off from last season as Miller-Farrell sent a service into the box off a setpiece to a streaking Dum, who finished the play off from the far side.
The Berg played physical throughout as they recorded 13 fouls and three yellow cards on the night. The Yeomen outshot the Berg 9-7, with both teams recording four shots on goal.
Lipshultz played all 90 minutes in goal – registering four saves in the shutout win.
Oberlin returns to action on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when it plays host to Albion College.
