Delaware, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's and women's track and field teams concluded the North Coast Athletic Conference meet this evening. The Yeowomen, finishing second, earned their best outdoor track and field result in NCAC history. The Yeomen earned a fourth place finish accumulating their highest point total in an NCAC championship meet.
Madeline Schultz was honored for her outstanding performances being named, “NCAC Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year”. Schultz won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:04.92 just missing the NCAA provisional qualifying time. She also placed third in the 100m hurdles. Her championship performance from last weekend's heptathlon in the NCAC Multi-events also added ten points to the Yeowomen's team total.
Joining Schultz on the championship 4x400 meter relay squad were teammates
Clara Shaw,
Laura Vernon, and
Amanda Miller. The quartet outpaced the field by running a school record time of 4:01.01 besting the 2008 mark of 4:02.05.
OC senior
Nicky Ouellet, a distance standout, was a double winner earning victories in the 800m and 1500m runs. Ouellet and Shaw finished first (2:16.95) and third (2:18.23) in the 800m run. The duo went 1-2 in the 1500m run stopping the clock at 4:44.71 and 4:45.02 respectively.
Head Coach
Ray Appenheimer was thrilled with his team's performances. “This has been the best year for Oberlin College Track and Field ever. It was a total team accomplishment; we scored in nearly every event that we competed in.”
The Oberlin College men's squad dominated the 400m dash finishing first, second and fourth.
Seth Wimberly won the 400m dash with a time of 49.12,
Solomon Turner was on his heels turning in a time of 49.27 and
Reshard el-Shair took fourth in 49.56.
Wimberly was also the runner-up in the 200m dash (22.38). Wimberly, Turner,
Peter Morris, and el-Shair finished second in the 4x400m relay. The foursome combined for a 3:17.74 performance, smashing the oldest Oberlin College track and field record on the books. The previous record of 3:20.00 was set by the 1928 squad. The 2008 crew bested the NCAC mark set in 1986 by Denison University, however, Ohio Wesleyan University holds the new record by finishing first in a time of 3:16.99
Senior distance runner
Ryan King stopped the clock in school-record time of 3:57.32 in the 1500m run finishing second. King bettered Bryan Wills' 1980 school mark by more than two seconds.
Ryan Magiera leapt to a third place finish in the men's high jump. He cleared the bar at a height of 6-01.25.
Oberlin's performance may have been one of its best, but coach Appenheimer is already excited about the future of OC track and field commenting, “With our returning athletes and incoming recruits, next season's performances could be even better.”
Oberlin will be competing next weekend at Allegheny College in a “last chance” meet in hopes of finding and improving national qualifying marks.
