Day One of the NCAC Championships is in the Books

Delaware, Ohio – The Oberlin College track and field teams turned in some strong performances on day one of the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships as both the men's and women's teams rest in third place through six scored events.

The Yeomen haved totaled 39 points as team, while the Yeowomen have accumulated 28 points thus far. Ohio Wesleyan men (53 points) and women (69 points) are currently in first place.

“It was a good day for us with many athletes qualifying high to put themselves in a prime position to score points tomorrow,” director of track and field Ray Appenheimer said.

In his final conference championship meet, senior Everett Schlawin set a new school record time of 31:53.67 in the 10,000 meters to place second overall.

Sophomore Josh Gallagher led the Yeomen in the throwing events by placing second in the discus with a mark of 146-01. The West Harrison, New York, native also took third place in the shot put with a hurl of 48-00.25.

Just five days after breaking his own school record in the decathlon, senior Kyle Taljan returned to finish third in the pole vault by clearing 13-07.75.

On the women's side sophomore Laura Vernon also shined in the pole vault as she covered 9-08.50, which was good for second place.

Heptathlon winner Madeline Schultz continued to impress in the long jump with a leap of 15-11.50 to finish third in the event.

Sophomore Julia Beebe took fifth in the 10,000 meters by completing the course in 40:03.85.

Day two of the NCAC Championships will get underway tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
