Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin College lacked the speed and power of nationally-ranked Denison, but didn't lack the effort in a 22-3 defeat that was dealt to them by the Big Red in NCAC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday night.
“We played extremely hard and I am proud of our guys fighting all the way to the end,” head coach Kevin Walz said. “We knew coming into the game that they would be a tough match-up for us, but that didn't scare us away as we kept them in check early on.”
Denison, who scored 12 goals in the first period on Sunday against fellow nationally ranked NCAC member Ohio Wesleyan, tallied just seven in the opening session against the Yeomen.
The Big Red (6-1, 3-0 NCAC) would add eight scores in the second and lead 15-2 at the break. Oberlin first scored on an
Alex Chapman goal with an assist coming from freshman
Dylan Holmes at the 9:01 mark. Holmes later took an assist from
Alex Jacobs to register a score of his own.
Kif Leswing added the final Yeomen tally in the fourth period.
Rookie cage-dweller
Jon Weisburst had a fine day in goal as he recorded 27 saves and scooped up six ground balls.
Although, OC was out-shot 62-19, their workman-like mentality can be shown in the hustle stats as they won 15-of-28 face offs and grabbed 37 ground balls compared to just 41 for the victors.
Oberlin will try to bounce back on Saturday at Wittenberg. The opening face off is set for 1 p.m.
