Gambier, Ohio
– The Oberlin College women's tennis team defeated Allegheny College this afternoon to finish third in the NCAC Tournament. Denison University, ranked 8th nationally sent the Yeowomen into the third place match when the Big Red won the morning's semifinal match 5-1.

Oberlin led 2-1 following doubles action against Allegheny. Winning in the No. 1 slot, Ariel Lewis and Finley Gates earned their eleventh victory together. Seniors Olivia Hayden and Kelly Sipp downed Janna Dickerson and Elyse Schmitt 8-4 to give OC the early cushion.

In singles action the Gators would earn wins at No. 4, 5 and 6 leaving the Yeowomen's top three players to decide the match. Lewis would defeat Lauren Kristofco (6-1, 6-4) for her 25th win overall this season.

O. Hayden had little trouble in her familiar No. 2 spot, she was a 6-0, 6-2 winner. Sipp's match with Sara Longo would be the difference between third and fourth place. In a close first set Sipp took a 6-4 win and then outlasted Longo 7-5 to win in straight sets giving Oberlin the victory and a third place finish.

Head coach Constantine Ananiadis said, “This was a good finish for the team. We had been playing good tennis and this afternoon we saw the results. It was great for a senior, Kelly, to end the match and clinch it for the team.”

In the semifinal match with Denison, Oberlin was close to winning at No. 1 doubles as the first-year duo of Lewis and Gates would get within two games of Kristin Cobb and Marta Drane losing 8-6.

Jane Hayden and Sarah Teitelbaum fell to Sarah Short and Erin Chadwell 8-4 at No. 3. Leading 3-0 following doubles, Denison would grab wins in the 3 and 5 spots. O. Hayden was credited with a win at No. 2 as the Denison player would retire from the match due to injury.

“This has been a good season for the girls, we have had contributions from everyone at some point, they should all be proud. I am excited for next year, we will return some young, experienced players," commented Ananiadis.

The Yeowomen finish the season 14-12. They will be without the service of four key players next year. Seniors O. Hayden, K. Sipp, J. Hayden and S. Teitelbaum will graduate in May and their contributions to the team will be missed. The returning Oberlin line up will look to improve upon this successful season.
