Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team held a one-goal lead with 1:41 left to play, but Carthage College scored twice in the closing moments to steal a 14-13 win away from the Yeomen.
In seesaw battle from the opening face-off, Oberlin took a 13-12 lead on a
Rob Bond goal with 6:29 to play, but the Yeomen couldn't sneak another in the cage the rest of the way.
Nick Thypin-Bermeo led the Oberlin attack with three goals, while Bond,
Alex Chapman,
Dylan Holmes and
Theo Anthony all added two apiece.
The Redmen led 6-5 at the break and used a three-minute illegal stick violation on Oberlin to help extend its lead to 9-6 with 6:54 left on the third quarter clock.
With 11:47 left to play, Oberlin fought back to tie the score at 11 on back-to-back goals by Chapman. Another Redmen score made it 12-11, but unfortunately goals by Bermeo and Bond were not enough to hold on for the win.
Oberlin dominated the face-off battle, winning 21-of-27 as
Alex Jacobs led the way by going a perfect 10-of-10. Oberlin out-shot Carthage 42-35 and had a slight 31-30 edge on ground balls.
The Yeomen, who honored seniors Jesse Kane and Matt Hollebeck before the game, will wrap-up conference play on Wednesday at Kenyon College.
