Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team turned in their best first-half performance of the season, but couldn't carry the momentum over into the final two periods as they fell to the College of Wooster Scots 16-6 in NCAC action on Thursday night.
Nick Thypin-Bermeo and
Alex Jacobs led the Oberlin offense with two goals and one assist each on the night.
Dylan Holmes and
Rob Bond also found the back of the cage one time, while Jesse Kane dished out one helper of his own.
“We played a great 30 minutes, but need to find a way to put it all together,” head coach Kevin Walz said. “It's bittersweet for us right now as we are clearly turning the corner and starting to play better, we just need to eliminate some mistakes so we can start coming out on top in these types of games.”
The Scots struck first with a goal at 13:23 mark, but Thypin-Bermeo answered right back for the Yeomen. Holmes used an assist from Jacobs to tie things at two, but Wooster led 3-2 after one period.
In the first 15 minutes, Oberlin out-shot Wooster 9-8 and won 4-of-6 face-offs. The Yeomen also scooped up nine ground balls compared to seven for the Scots.
Jacobs scored twice in the second stanza, but the Scots also snuck three into the cage to lead 6-4 at the break.
Unfortunately, Wooster busted the game open in the third with seven answered goals. The Yeomen fought back by netting the first two scores of the fourth, but it was too little too late as the Scots tacked on three more insurance scores.
The Yeomen won 15 of the game's 25 face-offs, led by Kane, who went 12-of-17. Rookie goalie
Jon Weisburst made 15 saves and picked up six ground balls.
Oberlin returns to action on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. when they welcome Saint Vincent College to town.
