Johnson Breaks Conference Record on Day One of the Championships

Sophomore Joanna Johnson set a new North Coast Athletic Conference Championship record in the 5,000 meters to highlight day one of the NCAC Indoor Championships at Denison University.

The Chico, California native's record-setting run of 17:37.37 was nearly 11 seconds better than the second-place finisher and claimed 10 team points for the Yeowomen.

Sophomore Laura Vernon also won the pole vault with a school-record mark of 10-02.75.

Josh Gallagher hurled the shot put 47-09.25 to finish fourth overall – earning five points for the Yeomen.

“Everyone that we needed to perform well and qualify for finals did just that, putting us in great position to score a lot of points tomorrow,” director of track and field Ray Appenheimer said.

Continuing his outstanding season and headlining the trial portion of the night, Solomon Turner won the 200 meters with a school-record sprint of 22.51. Teammate Reshard El-Shair ended fourth at 22.91.

Madeline Schultz flew through the 55-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 9.15 to qualify third, while Clara Shaw touched the tape in 2:25.12 in the 800 meters for third place as well.

Through just four scored events on the women's side, Oberlin rest in fourth place with 20 points. The men had just three events scored on this night and sit eighth with five points.
