Hilton Head, S.C. – The Oberlin College women's tennis team suffered a 6-3 setback at the hands of the Central Region's 10th ranked Carleton College Knights. The Yeowomen finished their four-match stint in Hilton Head with a 2-2 record.
Nattie Chan, a freshman hailing from Richmond, British Columbia, Canada earned her first singles win during the trip with a straight set win over Hannah Goldberg (6-2, 6-3) as the OC No. 4.
OC's other singles winner in the lineup was another young talent,
Finley Gates. Gates and the Knights' Hannah Clemons were in a tight contest from the start. Clemons used a 7-4 tiebreak win to take a first set lead. A strong second set from Gates evened the match at a set apiece and the super tiebreak went in favor of the Oberlin No. 5, 10-6.
Ariel Lewis, the top hitter in the Yeowomen lineup was matched up against the Central regions 9th ranked player in Kathryn Schmidt. Lewis, no slouch herself at #18, battled back from a 6-2 loss in the first set to even the score, winning the second set 6-4. Schmidt proved to be a bit too much for the freshman taking the third set 6-0.
“I give Carleton a lot of credit for their win, they are a good team that is well coached. Our girls played well, we just lost to a better team today. This was a good college match with good atmosphere about it and I have been pleased with our effort all week," said head coach
Constantine Ananiadis.
All three double matches were tightly contested. Lewis and Gates lost 8-5 to a regionally ranked duo. Seniors
Jane Hayden and
Sarah Teitelbaum also lost by an 8-5 score.
OC's No. 2 doubles partnership of
Olivia Hayden and
Kelly Sipp earned the Yeowomen's third point in the match with an 8-6 win over Goldberg and Frances Leung.
Oberlin (10-6) will return from Hilton Head, S.C. on Saturday and is next in action at the GLCA Tournament, April 3-4.
