March 21 – Oberlin traveled to Sewanee, Tennessee on Saturday in Division III men's lacrosse action and were welcomed rudely as the host Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a trio of unassisted Jack Thomasson goals. The first quarter was dominated by the home team as the frame ended with a 5-1 Tigers lead.
The second period swung the other direction as a six goal Yeomen barrage allowed Oberlin to claw their way back into the contest. Down four after the first period Oberlin was able to draw within one, 8-7, at the break.
With the momentum in their favor the visiting Yeomen jumped out strong in the second half, taking their first lead of the game on two quick goals from freshman
Dylan Holmes and sophomore
Rob Bond. Despite a promising start to the second stanza, Sewanee answered the Yeomen charge with 4 straight goals and finished the 3rd quarter with a 14-10 lead. Sewanee added three insurance goals in the fourth and let up one more to Oberlin with 25 seconds left to take the 17-11 win.
Head Coach Kevin Walz said, “We really executed well in the second quarter and capitalized on each opportunity we had in that frame. As we continue to improve as a team we need to be able to execute like we did during that stretch for the entire game. With greater consistency, better results will follow.”
Sewanee's Thomasson led all scorers with 6 goals. For the Yeomen, Holmes led the offensive rush with 4 goals and an assist. Sophomore
Nick Thypin-Bermeo had 2 goals while
Alex Chapman, Jesse Kane,
Theo Anthony, and Rob Bond rounded out the offensive attack with one goal a piece.
The Yeomen will get after it again next weekend as they travel to Guilford College, Sunday March 29th.
