Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's tennis team improved to 7-4 on the year with a tightly contested win over John Carroll University. The Yeowomen are 3-0 in matches decided by a 5-4 scoreline.

The Yeowomen found themselves down 2-1 following doubles action. Oberlin's freshman pairing at No. 2 doubles, Ariel Lewis and Finley Gates, had little trouble with Anna Navatsyk and Amy Marchlen of JCU downing them 8-2.

The exclusion of OC senior Sarah Teitelbaum from the lineup due to injury, allowed for a second pair of first-years to partner at No. 3 doubles. However, Rebecca Brown and Emily Thebaut were bested by the Blue Streaks' duo of Ashley Bauer and Deana Bouchahine.

I am happy with the team's performance tonight especially after Wednesday's outing. We competed today, raising our level of intensity and because of that good things happened,” noted Oberlin head coach Constantine Ananiadis.

During singles action the Yeowomen came up with a couple of key wins that secured the team victory. OC's top two hitters made it look easy, Lewis topped Marchlen (6-1, 6-1) and Olivia Hayden was a winner at No. 2 over Maria Ciccolini (6-2, 6-2).

Oberlin first-years provided the excitement down the stretch. Nattie Chan playing across the net from Meredith Skaggs at No. 4 found herself tied at one set apiece after winning 7-5, then falling 6-4 in the second set. She dominated the third set winning convincingly 6-0 earning a much needed team point.

Ananiadis commented, “The girls put themselves into positions to win and then did what it takes to do so.”

Gates would earn the deciding fifth team point, the third women's tennis player to do so this season, by defeating Bauer in a three set match. Even at one set apiece Gates battled to a 6-4 win in the third set to give Oberlin the match.

The Yeowomen are back in action Thursday, March 19 as they host Tiffin University, the match is slated for a 5 p.m. start. The women's team will join the men's team in Hilton Head, S. C. over spring break and they are scheduled to play four matches beginning Monday, March 23.
