Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin College first-year
Sam Towne was a double winner this afternoon; he partnered with
James Blankenship at No. 3 doubles and was also a winner at No. 4 singles. However, Grove City College, the President's Athletic Conference 2008 Champions, proved to be too much for the youthful Oberlin team to overcome, winning the match 7-2.
The Yeomen duo of Towne and Blankenship were engaged in a tight contest with Grove City's Jon Pombo and Jeremy Dwyer. The two-hour match was close from the start, but the solid play of the OC pairing prevailed. Utilizing a tiebreak to determine the winner the Yeomen won 9-8 (8-6).
OC head coach Adam Shoemaker commented, “Sam and James played a good, long, hard match at No. 3 doubles and then they each went on to play quality single matches after having already been on the court for two hours.”
Grove City's Dwyer bested Blankenship 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles slot. Towne matched up with Marc Mentzer in the No. 4 singles position. Through the first set it could have gone either way but it was Towne who would take control early in the second set and not look back cruising to a 7-5, 6-1 score, his first singles win of the season.
The Yeomen will have a week with no contests as they prepare for their annual trip to Hilton Head, S. C. for spring break. They will square off with Carleton College on Monday, March 23.
