Ada, Ohio – The Ohio Northern University Polar Bears, hosting their first home match of the spring in the ONU Sports Center, handed the Oberlin College Yeowomen an 8-1 defeat Wednesday evening. The Polar Bears (6-1) enjoy playing at home indoors owning a 54-7 record over the past seven seasons.
Oberlin fell behind early as all three doubles pairing went down 4-0. Each duo began to get a feel for the surface and turned in better second halves of the matches, however, the Polar Bears earned 8-4, 8-2 and 8-2 wins.
The lone OC win came at the No. 1 singles slot as first-year standout
Ariel Lewis has stretched her win streak to eight matches as she bested All-OAC honoree Kaitlyn MacDonald in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).
Senior
Olivia Hayden won the first (6-3) of three sets against ONU's Bridget Larson, but it was Larson who took the second and third earning the win at No. 2 singles.
Oberlin's other first-year's in tonight's lineup Finely Gates and
Nattie Chan put in good efforts. Gates played up in the lineup at No. 4, she lost (6-1, 6-2) to Liz Bajusz. Chan battled back from a first set deficit to win the second 6-3, but eventually fell 10-5 in the super tiebreak that was played instead of a third set since the dual match had already been decided.
OC head coach
Constantine Ananiadis commented, “Tonight we lost to a better team. We did not play all that well or make the necessary adjustments. We are returning to the court after a two week break from competition, maybe that wasn't the best for us, ONU was just better tonight.”
The Yeowomen (6-4) will have a quick turn around as they entertain John Carroll University on Saturday in John W. Heisman Field House following the Oberlin men's tennis match with Grove City College.
