Results vs. Malone University

The Oberlin College women's tennis team began the spring portion of their season in fine fashion by winning two matches at home in the John W. Heisman Field House. The Yeowomen defeated Baldwin-Wallace 5-4 in the early match and capped the perfect day with a 9-0 sweep over Malone University.

Oberlin survived a battle with the Yellow Jackets earning victories at #2 and #3 doubles to start the day as well as wins from the #1, #2, and #6 singles spots. Ariel Lewis and Finley Gates earned an 8-4 win over Baldwin-Wallace's Greene and Trampert. The senior partnership of Jane Hayden and Sarah Teitelbaum also earned a point for the Yeowomen as they downed the Yellow Jacket pairing of Essig and Pelosi in the #3 doubles slot.

In singles play the Yeowomen got strong performances from Olivia Hayden and first-year Nattie Chan. Fellow first-year Lewis earned a two set win over Pecinovsky 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 as she continues to do well as Oberlin's #1. O. Hayden provided some senior leadership as she battled back from a 5-1 deficit in the third set to down Baldwin-Wallace's #2, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-5). Chan, who joined the Yeowomen squad this spring after not competing during fall, provided an immediate impact as her match at the #6 singles slot proved to be the decider in today's match. After falling in the first set 6-3 to B-W's Marshall, Chan earned matching 6-4 wins in the second and third sets to give OC the deciding 5th point of the match.

OC head coach Constantine Ananiadis noted, “We continue to find ways to win close matches and I am pleased with the effort from the girls today and it was nice to see contribution from everyone.”

The Yeowomen defeated Malone University 9-0 during the afternoon match. Oberlin took all three doubles matches easily as J. Hayden and Chan grabbed an 8-0 win at #3 over Armburst and Hagan. In singles play Lewis dealt Phillips a pair of 6-1 losses at the #1 spot. Oberlin's #2 Kelly Sipp cruised to 6-1, 6-4 win and junior Breanna Cahill earned a victory at the #6 singles spot (6-1, 6-3) over Deweerd of Malone.

Ananiadis also stated, “We need to continue improving and be more disciplined when leading so that we can close out matches when competing with tough regional and conference opponents.”

Oberlin (3-1) travels to the University of Mary Washington for matches against Bridgewater College and the hosts next Friday and Saturday, February 13-14, 2009.
