Cleveland, Ohio – Making their first appearance in the NCAA Cross Country Championships since 1984, the Oberlin College women's cross country team finished 23rd in the 32-team field with 508 points.
"This was a great way to end our season," Head Coach
Ray Appenheimer said. "For a team that wasn't ranked to start the year, to finish 23rd at nationals says a lot about our program and how far we have come. We got great fan support and that surely helped our runners succeed today."
Junior sensation
Joanna Johnson spearheaded the Oberlin effort with a phenomenal run by placing fifth overall with a time of 21:45.2, earning her second straight NCAA All-America honor in cross country and third in her career. The Chico, California, native enacted some revenge if you will on NCAC rival Katie Navarre of Denison University, besting her in the race by nearly three seconds. Navarre was named the NCAC and Great Lakes Region Runner of the Year, honors that Johnson won in 2008.
"Joanna ran her best race of the year at the best possible time," Appenheimer added. "She ran a smart, determined race and led part of the way."
Freshman
Sara Terashima was Oberlin's second-highest finisher as she checked in at 23:25.3 to finish 78th out of 279 runners in the field.
Running the final races of their cross country careers, seniors
Clara Shaw and
Cordelia Revells finished just 15 seconds apart of each other. Shaw stopped the clock in 24:06.6 – placing 157th, while Revells completed the 6k trek through the Highland Hills Golf Course in 24:21.5 to end 182nd.
Julia Beebe rounded out the Yeowomen's placers in 252nd with a time 25:23.3. Also competing in the race for Oberlin was sophomore
Nina Cole (264th/25:34.9) and first-year
Kristina Witcher (268th/23:53.1).
In Oberlin's only other trip to nationals in 1984 they tied for 10th overall with 265 points, but just 12 teams competed in the race. The Yeowomen's highest finisher in that race was Kathy Barnum, who ended 63rd with a time of 19:18.97 in the 5k race.
Freshman
Eric Line competed as an individual the men's 8k race and turned in a very strong performance by placing 130th with a time of 26:53.3. He was the third-highest freshman finisher in the race.
Wisconsin Eau Claire won the women's title with 171 points, while North Central took the men's crown with 50 points as their top five runners finished in the top-17.
Senior Ricky Flynn of Lynchburg was the men's individual medalist with a time 25:09.8, while Wendy Pavlus of St. Lawrence was the women's champion with a mark of 21:28.
