Women Cross Country Punches a Ticket to Nationals

Terre Haute, Ind. – The Oberlin College women's cross country team was simply sensational on Saturday afternoon at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Meet in Terre Haute, Indiana by finishing second overall to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships next Saturday in Cleveland, Ohio.

“This a great day for Oberlin College and the Oberlin College cross country program,” Head Coach Ray Appenheimer said. “The women's team ran a great race against some of the best competition in the country and I couldn't be more proud of their efforts.”

The Yeowomen, who entered the race ranked 22nd in the latest USTFCCCA Poll and fourth in the Great Lakes Region, bested 12th-ranked DePauw and 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve in the race with 120 points.

The 2008 Great Lakes Region Runner of the Year Joanna Johnson spearheaded the Yeowomen effort by placing third overall in the 231-person field with a time of 21:38.04.

Senior Clara Shaw was Oberlin's second-highest finisher in 19th place as she completed the 6k course in 22:59.70. NCAC Newcomer of the Year Sara Terashima was three spots back at 23:09.72.

Senior Cordelia Revells was crossed the finish line in 30th place with a time of 23:30.11 and Julia Beebe rounded out Oberlin's point scorers in 50th at 24:04.06.

The trip nationals for the Yeowomen cross country team will be its first since 1984. The national-qualifying performance is also the first for any Oberlin athletics team since the 2005 field hockey team.

Capping an exciting day for Oberlin cross country was freshman Eric Line as his remarkable efforts earned him a trip to nationals as well. Line finished ninth overall with a time of 26:11.70 and was the top freshman finisher in the race. He becomes the first Yeoman harrier to qualify for nationals in over decade.

“Eric ran an aggressive, smart race,” Appenheimer said. “He had a great mindset going in and was very determined. He is going to be something really special during his time here.”

As team Oberlin finished 14th in the 35-team field with 365 points. Sophomore Stephen Williams was the Yeomen's next highest finisher at 59th overall as he completed the 8k course in 27:18.16. Classmate Derek Lange ended 85th at 27:37.10.

Sophomore Ben Schild checked in at 27:57.74 to finish 105th while junior Sean Dunne rounded out Oberlin's placers in 107th with a mark of 27:58.07.
