Cleveland, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's swimming and diving team defeated John Carroll University 128-103 on day two of the Veale Classic at Case Western Reserve to garner their first win of the season. The Yeomen fell to the Blue Streaks 146-87.
“After an emotional meet last night both teams responded well and put together many good swims today,” Head Coach Mark Fino said. “Hopefully we have a great week of practice and will be able to have a strong showing next Saturday in our home pool.”
Building off yesterday's outstanding efforts, first-year
Grace Aheron picked up right where she left off, winning the 200-yard free in 2:00.21. She also set a new meet record in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:11.10, which was over 11 seconds faster than the second place finisher and good for second all-time in the OC record books.
The Yeowomen claimed the top two spots in the 1,000-yard free as
Jenny Meltz touched first at 11:21.20 with rookie teammate
Danica Watson following in a close second at 11:21.72. Watson also won the 100-yard free in 56.17.
Junior
Sara Kadi continued her winning ways with a convincing victory in the 200-yard IM with a mark of 2:15.58. She also won the 500-yard free by nearly five seconds, stopping the clock at 5:26.32.
Laura Fries added her second win in as many days by finishing the 200-yard back in 2:15.03 and
Shannon Gallagher was also triumphant in the 50-yard free at 25:83.
Gallagher, Aheron, Watson and Kadi also combined to win the 400-yard free relay in 3:44.72.
On the men's side,
Dimitri Macris cruised to victory by over 10 seconds in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:42.29.
Sophomore
Chris Canning added his second straight 50-yard freestyle win by tapping in at 22.19. Classmate
Nick Lashway is also off to strong start this season as he won the 200-yard IM in 2:04.51 and the 200-yard back in 2:04.78.
Rookie
James Foust contributed by winning the 100-yard free with a new meet record of 48.86.
The Yeomen foursome of
Daniel Kolliner, Canning, Macris and Foust ended the meet by winning the 400-yard free relay in 3:28.82.
The Yeoswimmers return to the pool next Saturday when they play host to a double-dual meet against Wittenberg and Baldwin-Wallace. All of the action is set to begin at 3 p.m.
