Oberlin Harriers Finish Strong at Pre-regionals

Women's Results l Men's Results

Sept. 27 -
Two weeks after a rain-soaked home meet Oberlin College Cross Country was back in action today at Otterbein College, the site of the 2008 Great Lakes Regional Meet. Running on a course that they will return to in six weeks time, both Men's and Women's teams tallied excellent scores and finished with times that will no doubt be even better come November.

Leading the Yeowomen to a third place finish with 103 points was sophomore Joanna Johnson who stole the show in the women's race winning with a time of 21:24. Johnson and the rest of the Yeowomen had no problem adjusting to the 6k course, which added another 1,000 meters from their previous two races. Also finishing in the top ten was senior Nicky Ouellet in a time of 22:23, which was fast enough for 7th place.

First-year Christine Moore and junior Clara Shaw worked together to finish 23rd and 26th respectively. Moore's time was 23:21 and Shaw finished just five seconds back. Rounding out the top five was Piper Niehaus who finished in 54th place with a time of 24:01.

The women finished behind Case Western (#10 NCAA ranking) and only were just 20 points behind DePauw (#17 NCAA ranking).  Coach Ray Appenheimer was very pleased with today's outcome, and said, “It was great to run this well on a course that we will see again at Regionals. I think the women really came together and established themselves as one of the teams that will be in contention here for a trip to nationals in November.”

In the Men's race there were some great individual efforts as well, and as a team the Yeomen finished 8th out of 21 teams. The first Obie to cross the line was senior Everett Schlawin in a time of 26:00. Running in their typical pack style two other seniors, Ryan King (26:05) and Conor Doss (26:16), finished close behind. The trio of upperclassmen all finished in the top 45, placing 30th, 33rd, and 44th in the race.

The Yeomen finished with a grand total of 217 points on the day. Coach Appenheimer was similarly pleased with the Men's results commenting, “We really beat some good teams today, and there is no doubt that we are only getting better as the season continues.”
Both teams will have an open date next weekend and will be back in action as they travel to the All-Ohio Meet at Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday, October 10.
