August 30 – The trip west to Defiance, Ohio couldn't have turned out any better for the Oberlin College women's soccer team as they completed the weekend sweep with a 3-2 victory over Mount Union on Saturday afternoon.
“It was a great weekend for us and a nice start to our season,” head coach Kristen Hayden said. “Everyone stepped up and played well and that is why we were able to come back home with a pair of wins.”
After falling behind four minutes into the match, sophomore
Veronica Fusco scored her second goal in as many games with an assist coming from rookie
Ryann McChesney.
In the 64th-minute newcomer
Evanne Gordon took a deep cross from
Sami Taylor and deposited it into the back of net to make it a 2-1 OC lead.
After a goal by the Purple Raiders 70 minutes into the match, Oberlin responded just six minutes later as sophomore
Katy Holihan kicked in what proved to be the game winner as McChesney registered her second helper of the game.
First-year
Kelsey Atkinson earned her first collegiate start in goal, totaling four saves in the first half before giving way to
Sarah Grabinski.
The Yeowomen return to action next Saturday as they travel to Heidelberg for a 1 p.m. tilt.
