December 6 – The Oberlin College swimming and diving teams ended the 2008 portion of their schedule with a strong performance on the third and final day of the Wooster Invite on Saturday.
The Yeomen finished sixth overall in the 11-team field with 763 points, while the Yeowomen placed eighth with 655 points.
“Everyone did really well and we had a great final day,” head coach Mark Fino said. “I was pleased with how the weekend shaped out and was glad that we ended strongly today.”
Both teams excelled in the 400-yard free relay and 200-yard fly on Saturday. The women's foursome of
Shannon Gallagher,
Flora Samis,
Bryne Ulmschneider and
Sara Kadi recorded the third-best time in school history in the 400-yard relay with a time of 3:44.64 - earning them a sixth-place finish in the event.
The tandem of
Nick Lashway,
Jon Vimr,
Chris Canning and
Scott McInerney touched in at 3:14.23 in the 400-yard free relay to end in sixth.
On the women's side of the 200-yard fly, first-year
Jane McIntyre took the top spot in 2:11.96, which is the second fastest time in school history.
McInerney,
Corey Spiro and
Dimitri Macris ended in spots four through six in the 200-yard fly.
During the morning session, freshman
Bud Stracker won a “swim off” of the 200-yard breast in 2:15.06 to qualify for the “A” final.
Junior
Dan Holm also had an excellent all-around meet with solid performances in the breast and IM events.
Oberlin will embark on its annual training trip in Florida, before returning to competition on January 16 at Ohio Northern University.
