Box Score
November 1 – The Oberlin Women's Soccer team left every last ounce of effort on the field against Hiram and as a result was able to comeback from a 2-1 deficit to tie the game with under a minute left in regulation play, leading to what would result in a 2-2 draw.
On Oberlin's senior day, the Yeowomen were able to get on the board in the first half on a goal by sophomore
Amelia Jarvinen (Fairfield, PA/Fairfield). Jarvinen scored off a free kick from senior defender
Ariel Kahrl (Mt. Vernon, OH/Mt. Vernon) who used the free ball to place a cross nicely into the box. The remainder of the half was played without scoring as Oberlin took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Hiram evened the score early in the second half on a goal from Ashley Ellsworth. The goal tied the game at one, and also put an end to a shutout streak in net by Oberlin goalkeeper
Sarah Grabinski (Elmhurst, IL/York) of more than 200 minutes.
Hiram scored again several minutes later and seemed to have command of the game. However the Yeowomen were unstoppably resilient on this day and they continued to win balls and gain terrific scoring chances, so much so that Head Coach Kristen Hayden thought this could have been their best offensive game of the year.
Their hard work paid off as
Veronica Fusco (Croton-on-Hudson, NY/Croton Harmon) won a ball, dodged through two Hiram defenders and found the back of the net with only 46 ticks left on the clock. Said Coach Hayden, “I was so proud of how we continued to get after Hiram even when we were down late. Veronica made a nice play at the end of regulation, but the reason we got that goal had everything to do with the heart and leadership that was displayed by our two seniors, Joelle and Ariel, when we needed it most.”
Joelle Sesar (Vacaville, CA/Vacaville) and Karhl finished their final soccer season in an Oberlin uniform and were pivotal parts of an emerging team that finished the season on a two-game undefeated streak.
As a result of the tie against Hiram and the tie on the road at Ohio Wesleyan earlier this week, Oberlin was able to secure a spot in the conference standings ahead of Hiram.
