The Oberlin College men's tennis team began their 2008-09 season this afternoon on the newly resurfaced Don Hunsinger Courts, but unfortunately suffered an 8-1 defeat against John Carroll.

“It was good to get out there and play some good competition,” head coach Adam Shoemaker said. “We played some close matches today, but just couldn't get over the hump. However, with the young team we have I saw some things we can definitely build upon.”

Sophomore Peter Meckel was the lone victory for the Yeomen in the No. 2 slot as he bested Matt Tomayko in straight sets by the count of 6-2 and 6-3.

Junior Ben Godlove played in the No. 1 position and gave James Steward fits in the first set before falling 7-5 and 6-1.

First-years Joe Shin and Sage Aronson each won a set in positions three and four, but found themselves on the wrong side of the super-tiebreak sets.

Fellow freshmen Joe Leffler and Eliot Heaton rounded out the Yeomen lineup, but were upended in straight sets.

Godlove and Leffler teamed up in the No. 1 doubles position and played a hard-fought match against Steward and Tomayko, but eventually succumbed to an 8-5 defeat. Pedar Davis and Meckel also fell by the same count at No 3.

It is uncertain at this time if Oberlin's match against Baldwin-Wallace will be rescheduled this fall. If not, the Yeomen begin their spring season in early February.
