Yeomen Drop a Heartbreaker to Wooster

Box Score

October 7 –
Despite dominating the run of play for nearly the entire 90 minutes, the Oberlin College men's soccer team found themselves on the wrong side of a 1-0 decision against the College of Wooster Fighting Scots on Tuesday night.

The Scots (5-6-1, 2-2 NCAC) took advantage of a gratuitous foul call that led to Scott Bulkwald's penalty shot at the 53:49 mark, which proved to be difference in the end.

Oberlin (7-6, 1-2 NCAC) out-shot Wooster 15-5 and controlled possession throughout the match, but just could not find the back of the net.

The Yeomen nearly tied the game in the final seconds as Skyler Dum had his header denied by Scots' goalie Taylor Takacs and Michael Mullaley's follow in the closing moments also found the hands of Takacs.

With just six minutes to go Oberlin had what was its best scoring opportunity of the match as Mulley's corner kick found Evan Atwell for an acrobatic header that was sailing into the right side of the goal before it was knocked away by a Scots defender who was guarding the near post. However, that did not immediately end the threat as Dum quickly controlled the ball and rifled a shot that hit the cross bar.

OC also had three golden scoring opportunities in the first half as a flying Dum header drew the cross bar and another was turned away on a diving save by Takacs. Sophomore Wyatt Hayman also broke free in the middle of the box and had his header deflect off of the top cross bar as well.

The Yeomen, who also took five corner kicks compared to none for the Scots, return to action on Saturday at Wittenberg at 2 p.m.
