October 11 – The Oberlin College women's tennis team closed out their fall season in grand fashion with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Grove City College on Saturday afternoon.
With the match still in the balance, it came down to the No. 3 position where senior
Olivia Hayden was locked in a duel against Lisa Baldwin. After dropping the first set in a tough 7-6 decision, Hayden fell behind 4-3 in the second set, but Yeowomen's team captain displayed her sheer fortitude with three-straight points to battle back for a 6-4 victory. With the momentum on her side she was able to finish off her opponent with a 6-3 win to propel Oberlin to victory.
“This was a great way to end what has been a very productive fall season,” head coach
Constantine Ananiadis said. “It was great to see Liv pick up our team and bring home the win for us.”
First-year phenom
Ariel Lewis shined at the No. 1 slot, making short work of Tamara Nations 6-2, 6-0, while
Sarah Teitelbaum completed a trio of singles winners with back-to-back 6-4 scores against Christina Bedi in the No. 5 meeting.
Senior
Kelly Sipp partnered with Hayden at No. 1 doubles to knockoff Kit Garica and Nations by an 8-6 count. The tandem of
Jane Hayden and Lewis, which went to the finals of the Oberlin Open a few weeks ago, shined again at No. 2 with an 8-1 thumping of Kristin Taylor and Baldwin.
Earlier in the day, the Yeowomen took on one of the toughest teams in all of Division III in the Carnegie Mellon Tartans – suffering a 9-0 setback. Complete results can be found below.
