Samuel E. Barnes, a physical education major at Oberlin, won three letters in track, two in basketball, and two in football. A winner of the James Barnes Medal in track (named after his brother James D./ Jr. Class of '30), he placed second to the immortal Jesse Owens (Ohio State) at the All-Ohio track championships. In football he was selected to the All-Ohio team at the end. In 1944 he became one of the first 13 officers to receive commissions in the United States Navy. He received the A.M. from Oberlin in 1949 and the Ph.D. from Ohio State in 1957. A 1970 inductee of the Helms Hall of Fame, Barnes is emeritus chairman of health and physical education at District of Columbia Teachers College and past president of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the NCAA.
