Maxwell Ryan earned eight varsity letters as a member of the indoor and outdoor track and field teams and served as team co-captain his senior year. One of the best middle distance runners ever to compete for the Yeomen, Ryan holds the school record for the indoor 600-yard run with a time of 1:15.27 and is a member of the indoor distance medley relay team that holds the school record.

Ryan earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors 12 times, including seven as an individual and five as a member of relay teams. He was the indoor conference champion in the 600 as a sophomore and senior. Ryan won the indoor 880-yard run as a junior and placed second in the event at the NCAC championships his senior year. At the outdoor conference championships, Ryan finished third as sophomore and second as a junior in the 800-meter run and placed second in the 1500 meters as a senior. He was also a member of the 1600-meter relay team that placed second in 1987 and 1988 and third in 1989.

After leaving Oberlin, Ryan earned an M.Ed. from Antioch and an M.A. from Columbia. He was an elementary school teacher from 1993 to 2000 and is currently the COO of Morgane le Fay.
