Laurence H. MacDaniels, the "Iron Man" of Oberlin football, was the starting center on the three-time Ohio championship football teams from Oberlin College (1909-11). Gray described MacDaniels as "the steadiest and most reliable man Oberlin has ever had." MacDaniels was captain of the 1911 football team, freshman class president, served in the senate, honor court, "Y" cabinet, and sang in the glee club. In 1935 Savage listed MacDaniels at center on an "all-star" Oberlin football squad that appeared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1917 and his emeritus professor of floriculture at Cornell. He has been active in Oberlin alumni affairs, holding the positions of alumni class president and class agent.
