Hughes earned four letters in cross country and served as team captain during her junior year and co-captain as a senior. She was a two-time national qualifier and was voted the team's most valuable runner as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. During her senior season, she helped the Yeowomen to a perfect 5-0 record in dual meets, a North Coast Athletic Conference championship, a Great Lakes Regional championship, and a 10th-place finish at the NCAA championships. She placed seventh at the NCAC championships earning first-team all-conference honors and was Oberlin's top runner in 24 of 33 races during her career.
