Julia Thompson followed in the footsteps of her sister and brother and enrolled in Oberlin College in 1977. A member of the class of 1981, she was named Phi Beta Kappa and received the B.A. degree in psychology. an excellent all-around athlete, Thompson earned eight varsity letters including four in volleyball, three in basketball, and one in track. In her first and only season with the track team in 1979, she broke the school record in the shot put with a throw of 38-feet-6-inches, a mark that still stands. In the arena of basketball, Thompson was named "Most Improved" during her sophomore season and "Most Inspirational" by her team the following year. As a junior, she led the team in scoring (15.6 ppg.) and rebounding (9.7 rpg.) and she scored a career high 25 points against Denison. Thompson led Oberlin in scoring and rebounding in nine of 14 games during the 1979-80 season and she ended her career with 269 points and 367 rebounds over three seasons. A four-year member of the volleyball team, Thompson was captain of the 1978 squad. As a junior, she led the team in scoring with 100 points and was voted "Most Inspirational" player of the 1979 season.
