Jon Laird, a member of the class of 1984, earned eight varsity letters-four in football and four in baseball-and was captain of the football team his senior season. A three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection in football, he recorded 320 tackles and 10 interceptions in his career. He was named outstanding defensive back as a sophomore after leading Oberlin with 73 tackles and three interceptions. Laird led the team in interceptions, finished second in tackles and was named Outstanding Linebacker as a junior. During his senior season he had a career-best and team-high 92 tackles and was again named Outstanding Linebacker. A shortstop and pitcher on the baseball team, Laird hit .300 and had a 3.60 earned run average as a junior and was named the team's Most Valuable Player. During his senior year Laird was invited to throw the javelin in three track meets-he placed first in all three.
