An elite distance runner, Joanna (Johnson) Line was an eight-time North Coast Athletic Conference champion.
A native of Chico, California, Line was a three-time medalist in cross country and three-time winner of the 5,000 meters at the indoor conference championships. She added two more NCAC crowns in the 5,000 meters at the 2008 and 2011 outdoor championships.
A former team captain, she helped guide the women's cross country team to two consecutive NCAC Championships (2009-10) while also aiding in the Yeowomen's 2009 NCAC Indoor Championship.
The 2011 NCAC Indoor Distance Runner of the Year, Line was also tabbed the USTFCCCA Great Lakes Region Runner of the Year in cross country as a sophomore in 2008 and was the 2007 NCAC Newcomer of the Year in cross country.
A three-time All-American in cross country, Line graduated as a seven-time All-American as she added All-America honors at the 2009 and 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 10,000 meters in addition to earning the prestige in the 5,000 meters indoors and outdoors in 2011.
The recipient of the Norman H. Wright Prize for Biological Research, Line was Oberlin's NCAC John N. Stern award winner and was a CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American in 2011.
Following her time at Oberlin, Line was awarded a Watson Fellowship to explore the experiences of women runners in different cultural contexts. She trained and competed with teams around the world in countries including Ethiopia, France, Norway, and Singapore. Line went on to earn a master's degree from Smith College and a PhD from Bowling Green State University. She is currently an assistant professor of sport management at Hiram College and an Adidas x Athlete Ally Research Fellow. Line, who continues to run competitively, is married to former Oberlin runner Eric Line '13.
