James D. Barnes Jr., who succumbed to meningitis in 1935, starred in football, basketball, and track at Oberlin and was the captain of the 1930 men's track squad. His best career times in the 100- and 220-yard dashes were 9.8 and 21.0, respectively, and as a sophomore ran the third leg of the mile relay teaming with George Harrar, Charles Miller, and John Wilder (all class of '28) to set the Oberlin school record of 3:20.0 which still stands today. In addition to the sprint events, Barnes was an outstanding low hurdles and broad jump performer. The Oberlin News Tribune described Barnes as "a phenomenal athlete, clean sportsman, instinctive gentleman; and honor to his community and profession." Both Barnes and his brother, Samuel ('36) who was a member of the charter hall of fame class of 1986, were born in Oberlin.
