Howard Helfrich was a three-sport athlete for Oberlin, competing in basketball, football and baseball. He lettered three times on the hardwood and was the team captain during his senior season. Helfrich also earned two letters on the gridiron and one on the diamond.
Upon graduation, Helfrich took his knowledge of sports to Earlham College, where he served as the head coach for both the men’s basketball and baseball teams, while assisting with the football team from 1948-53.
Helfrich’s career then moved to Glenbrook North High School in 1953 where he held numerous positions in teaching and coaching. During his tenure, he coached football, baseball and basketball and also served as department chair and athletics director. He is, however, best known for his 37-year reign as the head coach of tennis.
Helfrich, who coached three individual state champions during his career, also led Glenbrook North to a state championship in 1982 and a runner-up finish in 1983. He has been inducted into the Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame for his accomplishments on the court.
