George Smith earned eight varsity letters at Oberlin including seven in indoor and outdoor track and one in basketball. He was captain of both the indoor and outdoor track teams during the 1986 and 1987 seasons and earned All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors 13 times. By the end of his senior season he owned or was a part of 13 school records, six of which he still holds. During his senior year, he earned All-America honors with a third-place finish in the 100 meters at the NCAA championships and set the Oberlin College record with a time of 10.87 seconds. At the NCAC outdoor track and field championships that year, he received all-conference recognition in four events with four second-place finishes. Smith's top conference finish came at the inaugural NCAC championships in 1985 when he placed first in both the 100 and 200 meters. While at Oberlin, Smith worked on The Oberlin Review staff as a sports editor from 1984-86 and as news editor in 1987. He was also an intern in the office of communications from 1985-86. He received a B.A. in English from Oberlin College then went on to receive a master's in journalism from Columbia University. He is currently a reporter for ESPN.
