A three-sport standout in football, basketball, and track and field, George "Howie" Furcron was the ultimate competitor. Known as a workhorse running back on the gridiron, he rushed for a conference-leading and then school-record total of 794 yards in just eight games during the 1953 season.
Affectionately known as Howie to his friends, those may not know that he played with pain throughout his entire athletics career after rupturing three discs in his back working in a factory following his high school graduation. The extent of his injury was undiagnosed until his sophomore year and after successful repair, he returned to have a historical senior season for the Yeomen.
The go-to guy for hall of fame head coach Lyle K. Butler, Furcron accounted for over 70-percent of the team's offensive production through the first four games of the 1953 campaign.
A role player on the basketball team, the 6-foot-3 Furcron was an outstanding teammate to his fellow members on both the basketball and track and field teams.
Following graduation from Oberlin, Furcron went on to earn a juris doctorate from Wayne State University. He practiced law and also worked in the real estate industry prior to his passing in 2004.
