Edwin H. "Deke" Fall , who passed away in 1969, still holds the Oberlin men's school record for the mile run of 4:15.8 set on a cinder track in 1917. At the time of his graduation Fall was considered "probably the greatest runner ever produced by the state of Ohio." His best time in the two-mile was 9:41.6 while he turned in a 1:58.4 clocking in the state half-mile versus Ohio State in 1915. Fall was also the captain of the Oberlin men's cross country team.
