Don Hunsinger served Oberlin College as a coach, teacher and administrator for 32 years
(1970-72, 1978-2008).
During his tenure, he was the head coach of football (12 seasons), men’s tennis (19 seasons), women’s tennis (13 seasons) and baseball (5 seasons) and also worked as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams.
As a head coach, he amassed 435 wins and was named NCAC Coach of the Year four times. He mentored eight All-Americans and coached 14 Heisman Club Hall of Fame inductees.
Hunsinger served as the director of athletics and physical education from 1983 to 1984 and from 1990 to 1994. Instrumental in forming the Heisman Club and the North Coast Athletic Conference, he still serves the conference as director of tennis and assists in the administration of the conference’s swimming & diving championships.
He is a member of the Lorain County Football Coaches Hall of Fame, the Ohio Tennis Hall of Fame, Elyria High School Hall of Fame and the Boardman High School Hall of Fame. In 2009, the North Coast Athletic Conference named its male student-athlete of the year award the Don Hunsinger Award in his honor.
Hunsinger, who impacted the lives of over a thousand student-athletes, graduated from Muskingum College in 1964 and earned a master’s degree in education from Ohio University in 1966.
Don and his wife, Stephanie, have been married 52 years. They have two sons, Eric and Scott, and six grandchildren, Donovan, Simon, James, Lucas, Avery, and Aiden.
