C. Winfred Savage was a football and baseball captain at Oberlin playing football for coach John Heisman in a 24-22 Oberlin win over the University of Michigan. In 1906 Savage became the nation's first Director of Athletics. Until his retirement in 1935 Savage held the post of A.D., associate professor, and professor of physical education.
