Club Sports Report 10/3/2017

Fencing:
The Oberlin Club Fencing Team just went to a tournament at Ohio State University, where we fenced U Mich, MSU, OSU, and Purdue.

Table Tennis:
The table tennis club has arranged with club sports and the recreation center to allow a middle schooler and aspiring table tennis player from the community to join the club at practices. He's having a great time and improving fast!  Also, the club recently purchased a new table, which we'll be assembling within the next few weeks.  We have registered with the NCTTA and are looking forward to competing in the Ohio West regional tournaments this year.

Club Soccer:
Club Soccer played Case Western and Kenyon this weekend, and we beat Kenyon 6-5! Our first win in over a year!

Quidditch:
This weekend the Oberlin Obliviators competed in our first tournament of the year in Cleveland! We played hard in four games, and we won our last game against the University of Dayton in overtime after Drew Styles caught the snitch.

Ultimate Frisbee:
This weekend the Flying Horsecows and the Preying Manti traveled to Niagara Falls for a tournament sponsored by the University of Buffalo. The Horsecows split into two teams for Saturday's pool play with one team finishing 4-0 and the other finishing 3-1. They combined for Sunday's bracket play and suffered a tough loss to Fredonia in the quarterfinals and finished the tournament in fifth place overall. Not only was lots of incredible ultimate played by all, but they were also able to see the falls!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team has had practice as normal, and we've been teaching some of the basic techniques to our newbies. The techniques we worked on this week were for breaking your opponent's guard, the single leg guard pass, and variations of the kimura and americana submissions. We also drilled rolls and worked on using your body weight as a driving force. At the end of practices, we always have open mat time for rolling (BJJ Sparring) with whoever wants to, and this week we started introducing the beginners into rolling too.

Club Tennis: Club tennis has hit the ground running this year. We have recruited many new members, both competitive and non-competitive players. For those who are looking to up their game and become a regular competitive player, we organized matches between players within the club using an online roster.  During practice, we provide multiple options for drills so that players can choose which area of their tennis play to work on. We also schedule in regular fitness/endurance training sessions between drills. Recently, we hired a new coach, Delaney, from the women's tennis team to work with players looking to develop their strokes. As of now the officers of club tennis are working hard to arrange for Oberlin Club Tennis to compete in away tournaments in the near future.
