OBERLIN, OH- After an outstanding week, Oberlin College baseball first-year first baseman Kyle Baxt has earned national recognition as the NBCWA Rookie of the Week, announced by the National Baseball College Writers Association (NBCWA) on Wednesday afternoon.
The rookie out of Wellington, FL turned in an impressive performance over the Crimson and Gold's four spring break games. In a midweek split against Maryville, Baxt went 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs in the series opener. The first baseman saw his 17-game hit streak come to an end in the second game, but his efforts in the dirt guided the Yeomen to a 2-0 against the Scots.
This past Saturday against Wooster, Baxt put on a show after going 9-for-11 with a homer, double, two RBIs, and two runs scored. He was especially impressive in game two of the doubleheader, hitting 6-of-7 with a homerun. The rookie played an integral role in Oberlin's 18-5 victory over Wooster, which marked the first time the Yeomen beat the Fighting Scots since April 1, 2017.
All in all, Baxt hit .526 (10-of-19) with two home runs, a double, and five RBIs, while collecting 17 total bases.
Bax was also honored as the North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week on Tuesday morning.
The Yeomen return to the diamond on Saturday, April 6, when they host the DePauw Tigers at home for a doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m.
