Greencastle, IN – The Oberlin College women's track and field team won its first North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship to complete Indoor-Outdoor NCAC Championship sweep.
The Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan have won the previous eight outdoor titles with the Yeowomen finishing second in seven of those meets dating back to 2009, but this weekend the script was flipped as Oberlin took home the crown with 260 points compared to the Bishops' 185.50. The Yeomen finished seventh with 39 total points.
"It is truly remarkable what this team was able to accomplish this year," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Ray Appenheimer said. "The hard work and dedication of these young women make me so proud and they truly deserving of all of their successes."
Like his team, Appenheimer also doubled-up as the NCAC Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year.
The Yeowomen's dominant throws unit was once again on display as five out of the top six finishers in the discus were representing the crimson sand gold. Junior
Ana Richardson picked up her second title of the weekend as she won the event with a toss of 142-05 and ultimately secured Field Athlete of the Year honors in the process.
Monique Newton was two feet back (140-05) to place second, while
Jasmine Keegan (139-01),
Naeisha McClain (116-04) and
Maya English (116-02) placed four through six to give Oberlin 30 points in the event.
Senior
Jillian Hostetler led a trio of point producers in the javelin as she placed fourth overall at 118-11. Keegan and Richardson checked in sixth and seventh at 106-05 and 104-05, respectively.
The fun in the field continued with the jumping events. Junior
Annie Goodridge led a group of three scorers in the triple jump, snagging all-conference laurels with a third-place leap of 35-10.50.
Olivia Woods checked in fifth at 35-03.75, while
Rayna Holmes was seventh at 34-10.50.
Sophomore
Megan Robinson cleared 5-03 in the high jump to finish fourth, while classmate
Kaylee Elliott picked up another point by tying for seventh at 4-09.
Oberlin started the running portion of the meet by touching the tape first in the 4x100-meter relay. Holmes led off and was followed by
Lilah Drafts-Johnson,
Imani Cook-Gist and
Emily Kelly.
The Yeowomen would tack on 12 more points in the 1,500 as
Shannon Wargo secured second in 4:44.71 with fellow rookie
Marija Crook checking in fifth at 4:56.45.
Drafts-Johnson, who was the NCAC Indoor Sprints/Hurdles Runner of the Year, added another conference title to her mantel as she took the 400 meters in 57.02.
Ify Ezimora was seventh in 61.86.
Drafts-Johnson would later return to win the 200 in a school record time of 25.20, erasing Kristi Barksdale's mark of 25.30, which has stood since 1982. At the meet's end, she was once again named NCAC Sprints/Hurdles Runner of the Year as she a part of four total wins on the weekend.
Oberlin had another threesome produce points in the 100-meter dash. Cook-Gist took home All-NCAC laurels with a second-place showing in 12.33. Kelly stopped the clock sat 12.75, which was good for sixth, while Holmes was one spot back at 12.87.
First-year
Oona Jung-Beeman picked up her first conference championship, winning the 800 in 2:20.18.
Anna Moore was sixth at 2:23.86, while Wargo checked in eighth at 2:26.37.
The rookie success continued in the 400-meter hurdles as
Jillian Doane earned All-NCAC honors in the event, placing second in 1:05.38. Junior
Gwennie Gardiner was fifth at 1:08.42.
In the longest race of the day, sophomore
Linnea Halsten took second in the 5,000 as she completed the course in 17:58.19. Crook was seventh at 19:00.26.
The meet would end the same way it started – with the Yeowomen winning a relay. The grouping of Drafts-Johnson, Jung-Beeman, Cook-Gist, and Doane blistered the field by nearly seven full seconds as they posted a winning time of 3:58.57.
On the men's end, sophomore
Hank Sinn capped a strong season by placing fifth in the discus with a heave of 133-08.
In his final conference meet, senior
Hannon Ayer was fifth in the 1,500 as he stopped the clock at 4:08.85.
James Tanford added eighth-place showings in the 200 (24.18) – and 400-meters (53.84).
In the closing 4x400 relay,
John Olsen,
Julian Guerrieri, Ayer and
Dylan Rogers placed eighth in 3:29.77.
Select team members will be in action on Friday at the Allegheny College Gator Invite as they strive to improve upon their national marks.
