OBERLIN, Ohio - On Saturday afternoon, in celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, Oberlin College female coaches and athletes hosted over 100 young women and girls for the third installment of 'Play Like a Girl'.
Female members from eight varsity teams taught skills and held mini clinics for the young girls from Oberlin and the surrounding communities.
"I think it's so important for young girls to get the chance to learn from and interact with our female student-athletes," explained head softball coach
Sara Schoenhoft, a co-organizer of the event. "Our student-athletes have the opportunity to serve the community as powerful and positive role models and that is so evident during events like this. It was inspiring to watch our women's teams run clinics with the girls on Saturday. Everyone did a great job and had fun!"
After some group stretching with Yeowomen from the track and field squad, participants got to learn the fundamentals of field hockey, lacrosse, volleyball, basketball, softball, badminton and soccer.
"I am so proud of this staff and our female scholar-athletes for organizing this event and encouraging young women to be active, play sports and be confident," said Delta Lodge Director of Athletics and Physical Education
Natalie Winkelfoos. "The turnout was fantastic and the connections made with our community was even better. The day was an incredible reminder that do anything 'like a girl' is to do things with confidence, kindness and intention."
Saturday attendance exceeds the two pervious years combined, making this year's 'Play Like a Girl' a the most successful yet. This year's Oberlin College Play Like a Girl date coincided with National Girls and Women in Sports Day that was observed on Wednesday, February 1.
