Geno Arthur claimed his second All-America honor of the school year, placing third overall in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships by resetting his own school record with a time of 14:29.04.
Arthur, a native of Camarillo, California, ran an absolutely flawless race. Sitting in the middle of the pack until the 10-minute mark, he made a move on the outside to get into eighth position. He then turned on the jets around the 12-minute mark and inserted himself into the lead group, passing four other runners along the way.
As the race neared the end, his gap on the rest of the pack only widen from there.
"Geno was simply incredible," Head Coach
Ray Appenheimer said. "He ran such a smart race and made his move at the perfect time. I am so happy for him and proud of what he was able to achieve."
Travis Morrison of North Central College won the event in 14:23.94, while Patrick Jenkins of Wisconsin-Stout was second in 14:25.77.
Arthur's teammates Carey Lyons and Monique Newton will be representing Oberlin tomorrow in the 3,000 meters and shot put, respectively.
