Grand Rapids, MI – The Oberlin College cross country teams had a very successful day at the Great Lakes Regional meet hosted by Calvin College as the Yeowomen finished second as a team to automatically qualify for the national meet.
Geno Arthur placed sixth overall in the men's race to guarantee himself an individual spot at nationals.
Joshua Urso finished ninth overall and could be awarded an individual spot in the national meet if Manchester is chosen as an at-large team for the national meet.
Leading the way for the Yeowomen was Emma Lehmann who finished runner-up in a time of 21:41. Teammates Lindsay Neal and Sarah Jane Kerwin rounded out the top three finishers for Oberlin. Neal crossed the line in fifth place with a time of 21:47, while Kerwin navigated the 6k course in a time of 22:08 to finish 11th overall.
Rounding out the scoring runners for Oberlin were Carey Lyons, who finished 38th overall in a time of 22:56 and Lauren Taylor who crossed in 52nd place with a time of 23:13.
Erica Morelli finished 79th with a time of 23:44 and Emily Curley rounded out the Yeowomen's tremendous effort, finishing in 24:22, good enough for 114th place.
For their efforts, Lehmann, Neal, and Kerwin were named to the All-Region team.
The women's team title was won by host Calvin College with 54 points and the Yeowomen edged out Hope for the automatic qualifying position, 104-105.
On the men's side, Arthur was the top sophomore finisher at sixth overall, crossing the line in a time of 25:23, 13 seconds off the winning pace set by Paul Lewis from Albion.
Urso's ninth place finish came in a time of 25:29, good enough to earn himself All-Region honors along with Arthur.
Samuel Coates-Finke crossed 87th overall in a time of 27:00, out-leaning a runner from Wilmington by seven-tenths of a second.
E.J. Douglas was right behind Coates-Finke, finishing 92nd overall in a time of 27:05.
Jimmy Taylor wrapped up his Oberlin cross country career with a 104th place finish in a time of 27:12. Gabe Brown navigated the 8k course in a time of 27:16, placing 109th.
Robert Moreton wrapped up the Yeomen's day with a 136th place finish, stopping the clock at 27:38.
As a team, the Yeomen finished 10th overall with 294 points. Wabash won the team title with 60 points, beating the 17-time defending regional champs Calvin who scored 79 points.
The National Championships will be contested next Saturday at Hanover College in Hanover, Ind.
