Cary, N.C. – Competing in her third NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships Oberlin College senior
Ariel Lewis lost in the opening round today falling to Lia Carlson of Swarthmore.
The momentum swings were quite noticeable in this morning's round of 32 match-up. In the opening set Carlson (18-4) won five straight points to take an early 1-0 lead. Oberlin's career wins leader answered winning four straight games holding a 4-1 advantage. With a 40-30 lead Lewis found it difficult to answer a couple of Carlson points and dropped the game and saw a shift in momentum as the Swarthmore No. 1 clawed her way back into the match taking the first set 6-4.
Lewis (23-6) returned to the court and won the first game of the second set but could not find the returns or the winners as Carlson won the second set 6-1.
“This was a tough match for Ariel. She played well enough but just couldn't combat the stuff that was coming across the net and unfortunately this last match didn't go her way. Give Carlson a lot of credit she didn't miss and she hit some good shots today,” said head coach
Constantine Ananiadis after the match. “Ariel had a great career at Oberlin. She is the best player in OC's history and this match doesn't diminish her achievements.”
Lewis finishes her Oberlin career with a 93-27 singles record with nearly all those wins coming in the top spot. She adds a 65-52 doubles record to her totals amassing a 158-79 overall record.
